Give some front-end love to Control

I’m tossing this one in here and I recognize it may be a bit broad.

I work in Control most of the day and the UX and experience on the backend feels dated and not joyful and delightful to use. For an application in which so many of us work day-in-day-out I think it needs some more care and attention from the inSided team.

In fact it’s even kinda funny that Control itself isn’t a product area in the dropdown of this topic — it’s really “the product” that so key to so much that we do. The front-end is the output.

It’s hard to sum up as a request, but in one word I’d say it doesn’t delight.

It’s flat, uninspiring, and could bring more joy. Even the front-end of my community feels more engaging and it’s not unusual for me to end up there first.

I know someone will probably say “tell me more” but there’s no one thing I think I could put into a single idea. I’d rather instead imagine the end state which might include -- better colour, modern interactions, client-side vs. server side experiences, and a UX/UI experience that feels richer and more anticipatory of the community manager’s needs. And mobile-friendly too so we can get our work done easily on-the-go (‘cause I know I get PM’d at all hours of the day and aren’t always at my desk).

As a product person and former product manager and someone that gets to work with a product with a lot of design love and delight, I’m going to leave this focussed on the problem, not the solution. But would love to see inSided put some time and care here soon.

And go ahead and vote this up if you feel the same or add your votes to my other ideas that tie into this:

+1 to mobile! Having to ban a bunch of spammers while on the go isn’t an easy task!

Considering how much time is spent in control by a community team, it could certainly use a fresh bit of paint.

I’ve gone so far as to use Chrome extensions to modify the CSS of Control, to make it feel less “blah”. I ended up losing all of that customization when the extension updated once, so I’m back to the standard control.

I totally get what Scott means when he says “it doesn’t delight”. Given that it’s where moderators spend much of their time, it would be nice to see Control get some love :)

My number one wish for Control is a search bar to help me find the setting I’m looking for!

Thanks @Scott Baldwin for submitting this idea!

I work in Control most of the day and the UX and experience on the backend feels dated and not joyful and delightful to use. For an application in which so many of us work day-in-day-out I think it needs some more care and attention from the inSided team.

Totally agree. To help better prioritise the work, would you name the top 3 pages that you use on daily base that can definitely use a face-lift?

In fact it’s even kinda funny that Control itself isn’t a product area in the dropdown of this topic — it’s really “the product” that so key to so much that we do. The front-end is the output.

I see your point. ‘The products’ are structure based on how our teams own the domains - a team would own end-to-end experience which touches upon multiple channels, e.g. destination, control, email, etc. But I can see it’s not easy to find a proper product area for this idea, as it is quite generic. Hope it gives some context. :)

Control is often sidelined for all the good reasons - aka focusing on end users. But at the end of they day CMs got to spend as much time in the community as in control, so it’s a massively important area for those running the show.

Just a long winded way to say +1.
