We offer two types of Email Campaigns: one-off campaigns and automated campaigns. Both email types are created in the same way, but they differ in the way they are sent.

  • Sending a one-off campaign means that the email will only be sent to the recipients who match your recipients filters now (or optionally: at the scheduled time in the future)

  • Publishing an automated campaign means that the email will be sent to anyone who matches the filters in the future (or optionally: include whoever matches the criteria now)

One-off emails are ideal for:

  • Community digests (eg. a monthly digest with the most engaging topics and events)

  • Promoting events or important topics (eg. if there’s a big community update or event)

  • Reaching beta testers (eg. if you want to reach users from a specific group)

Automated emails are ideal for:

  • Onboarding emails (eg. an email flow that sends after 7, 14 and 30 days)

  • Reactivation emails (eg. an email to users that haven’t been active for more than 30 days)

  • Promoting certain actions (eg. an email to new users that haven’t joined a group yet)

Examples of how different emails work

For all of the examples below, we’ll assume we’re addressing all users where the last activity is more than 30 days ago (and assuming this is 90% of your user base).

One-off email (sent now)

If you send a one-off email now, it will target all users where the last activity is more than 30 days ago now.

One-off email (scheduled in the future)

If you schedule a one-off email campaign a week from now, it will target all users where the last activity is more than 30 days ago at the moment of sending.

Automated campaign (default)

If you publish an automated campaign, it will only send out to users once their last activity is more than 30 days ago. It will not be sent to the 90% of users that currently match the criteria.

Hey--if we set up an automated campaign for the scenario above for user once their last activity is more than 30 days ago, will this send to a user more than once? If they continued to be inactive or if they resumed inactivity for another 30 days would they get another email of the same exact type? 🤔

Hi @mditucci! No, each automated campaign will only reach a user once.
