One thing I was thinking about with regards to "articles" is the ability to add Canonical URLs.

I sometimes have items posted on personal blogs and folks want me to repost on the community blog, it would be good to have a section on the editor to inform search engines of the original URL.

Definition: Canonical tags tell search engines that a given URL is the master copy or authoritative source for a piece of content. If there are multiple versions of the same piece of content at different URLs, the canonical tag informs search engines which one is the primary source. The canonical tag appears in the HTML head of your page.

Hubspot has a great article: Canonicalization 101: Everything You Need to Know About Canonical URLs - https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/canonical-url

Thanks

I was about to add this same idea just now, but glad it was already submitted. Vote for this please :)

I’ll add: I’d also want this available for Product Update posts. I have used the Product Updates module as all-updates publishing blog (not just for Product Updates) in two Insided communities. It’s the best solution for blog-type feeds of articles/posts, so I’d recommend any article functionality is also built out for product updates. Like this idea I submitted :)

And to offer more context on the value of this idea…

Use case: Reposting content from a company’s marketing site.

  • It is common that a company will have a marketing site (like Insided does at insided.com) in addition to their community domain.
  • Marketing sites / other sites may have content that would be beneficial on the community
    • Content marketing often has value! A blog geared towards prospects might also be good to have in a Knowledge Base or Product Updates module for existing customers
    • Press releases (like this week’s exciting gainsight news) are another example of content from a main company site that might be worth reposting to community
  • Reposting on community puts it into search, as well as the activity feed (and any forum subscriptions)
  • Canonical links would allow reposted content not to negatively impact the SEO of the site or the content.

Use case: Aggregating/reposting content from community members personal blogs (like @aluciani ‘s use case above)

  • In the age of the Influencer/Creator, your best subject matter experts will often maintain their own personal blogs, websites, youtube channels, etc.
  • They may be open to reposting their content to increase distribution/awareness, but will want SEO traffic to their original source
  • Canonical links and reposting should incentivize Influencers and Creators to get more involved with communities through content partnerships, syndication, etc.
  • The community benefits from great content that lives on the community, is searchable, and appears in the community feed.

This is something we are looking for as well. We dont need the option to add canonical url all the time but still we need this.
