Lively discussion with lots of back and forth in replies between users is great! Even a bit of debate or healthy argument is fine too. When this kind of discussion happens- the topic ends up being constantly bumped to the top of “recently active” every time a new reply appears.
Sometimes those discussions can be heated, have some negative sentiment or other issues that aren’t quite bad enough to warrant enforcement with a topic close or warning but still worth keeping off the top of feeds like “recently active”
I need a more nuanced approach to handling these discussions. Right now it feels like all I have are the sledge hammer approaches of closing topics, hiding it in a category with restricted visibility etc.
Idea
A way to let users have their debate without constantly jumping to the top of a feed where It doesn’t need to be. On other platforms that I’ve built or bought we’ve called this “sink post” or “debump” or… actually I can’t remember what else it’s been called.
Description
Something as simple as this in the Control menu where the other feed control options live for a Topic would do the job.

Function
I’ve seen the function work two ways:
- Subtle version: stop it being bumped with each reply, but let the topic fall down through the ranks of “recently active”.
- Not so subtle version: Remove it from all feeds
I’m a fan of the subtle version.
In either case - sinking the topic shouldn’t hinder it’s discoverability in search, user’s ability to subscribe or email notifications.
