Ad hoc checking of applications is not a scalable solution and there are many great use cases for private groups. The end user experience is likely to be poor: unanswered applications sitting for days or more if the community manager is unaware of new applicants. 

My suggested solutions are notification emails and notifications somewhere in Control. 

I don’t have a preference, but share yours in the comments.
