Example above (a featured topic) displays a bubble icon and comment count even if the topic/article is closed to comments. Would suggest this isn’t displayed if it is closed or another icon added to indicate it as closed to comments.

Great catch, @Scott Baldwin! I think it makes a lot of sense to visually signal a topic that is closed for comments. One scenario that comes to mind, though, is when a topic has been closed after it received a number of comments. It is still relevant to show the comments counter to encourage users to read that thread, so an icon to indicate that the topic is closed seems like a fitting proposal.
It’s an interesting discussion and I’d like to hear our product design lead’s thoughts on this one
