Require confirmation to mark "Best Answer"

Best Answers are powerful and control a lot within the system (promoting replies on the post, points, ranks, notifications, etc.)

They are as easy to mark as it is to “like" a post. I saw an idea from @Blastoise186 in a comment thread that I thought was a great one. It would be nice to require users to “confirm” a best answer as a step in the process to make it harder for them to accidentally mark one or to avoid ramifications when a user simply selects it out of curioisity.

I’ve already had to update this for two users in our platform as a moderator because they didn’t know what it would do.

Thanks!

Thanks @adam.ballhaussen !

As someone who only has Super User rights at my home base and no moderator rights anywhere, I’m unable to fix my own mistakes if I was to accidentally set a Best Answer… Which I’ve come close to doing maybe 50 times or so! I’m actually lucky in that I can get @timcavey and @JessPritch to rescue me if I badly mess up, but having a pro-active safety net would make it much safer.

I definitely would like to have the option to enable/disable the confirmation in my own settings though. Some people might want to keep it as is. But for me? I’d definitely turn this feature on!

I thought I remember this being an idea already, @adam.ballhaussen. Effectively an ‘Are you sure you want to assign this as a best answer’ double check feature?

Definitely a good idea to have this.

@timcavey you might thinking of the idea to undo a best answer, which is similar to this one. I upvoted that one as well as I think it could also help solve my problem, but @Blastoise186 made a good point in his comment that a “confirm” feature might be best. The “undo” would only exist to take back a mistake that could most likely be avoided by adding a requirement to confirm the action. And since things like gamification and notifications are tied to the action, I think it would be an ideal behavior to avoid erroneously marking an answer as best in the first place rather than to give members the ability to “undo”

Hey all, great to see the discussion going on here. The problem is clear: it’s easy to make a mistake while marking a ‘Best Answer’.

And since things like gamification and notifications are tied to the action, I think it would be an ideal behavior to avoid erroneously marking an answer as best in the first place rather than to give members the ability to “undo”

It’s a good argument by @adam.ballhaussen about why confirmation should be the very first step to avoid the mistake.

Thanks for all your input. I’d set this idea to ‘open’ to collect more votes and feedback. :)

I would love to have this feature. We have given some of the members Super User status, and nearly every week, there is someone who needs to us unmark their best answer because they clicked it on accident. Would appreciate them having to confirm if that is really the answer they want to mark.

Thanks for taking the time to share this idea.

After review, we've decided not to move forward at this time, as this doesn't address a broad enough set of customer needs relative to other priorities we're focusing on. The ability to undo a best answer is already supported, which provides a path to correct accidental selections.

We appreciate you raising it and encourage you to keep sharing feedback as it helps us make more informed decisions.
