I’d like to have the option to sort unanswered questions by newest and oldest so that members in our community could easily locate questions in need of answers.

Hello @Scott Baldwin thanks for this idea. We are actually investigating how the "unanswered questions" is used. This pages gets a really low amount of views, on average less that 0.5%. I wonder if you have some input on the type of users who make use of that page and the value they get out of it.

That’s great to hear @Marion Frecaut

Agree it is low traffic (we’re in a similar vein and less than 0.1-0.2%).

I suspect, based on feedback we’ve collected, that part of the problem is the visibility (as a tab and in the menu) but also that it’s hard to spot/find and react to questions that are unanswered).

For those motivated by trying to help with unanswered content, the only options to view this list today are based on recent activity, most views, and most replies -- none of which help narrow the list well. As such it’s overwhelming to see a long list of unanswered, find those where you might be able to jump in early and provide an answer (hence the newest request) or those that have been lingering for sometime and could probably be ignored or closed off (hence the oldest request).
