Private vs. Hybrid Community

Hi all!

We launched our Gainsight community about nine months ago and currently operate as a private community. As we continue to grow, we're exploring whether a hybrid model might create a better experience for both prospective and existing customers.

We're looking for honest feedback from those who have made a similar transition or who have considered it.

Some questions we're hoping to learn more about:

  • What benefits have you seen from a hybrid community model?
  • What challenges or unintended consequences should we be aware of?
  • How has it impacted community growth, registrations, and engagement?
  • What effect has it had on website traffic, SEO, and content discoverability?
  • How do you balance accessibility with customer privacy and exclusive member value?
  • If you've made the switch, what would you do differently?

We're genuinely looking for diverse perspectives, lessons learned, and any advice that can help us make an informed decision.

Tell us the good, the bad, and everything in between!

Thank you! 😊

I have done this a few times at a few different orgs. When you open the environment, you really have to be ready for different types of spam. I would be sure to expand on your banned phrases, build the AI content moderation and enable the AI registration bot.

It really helps the org SEO and EXTREMELY helps customers find answers to problems. Most users are going to Google to search for solutions and opening up your community will help match those searchers with solutions within your community.

I would do this through custom permissions over groups. At this moment, Gainsight can automatically assign permissions every few hours. This could be a problem as users wont have the correct permissions right away if a new account is created.

Overall Id do it again 10 times over but there are some challenges to overcome.
