Good morning people!

Sometimes we get members who ask a question that is already in the Community as an idea (because we don’t have that functionality yet). For example, we had a question “is there a dark mode for the site”?  There isn’t but I linked them to the idea to add that functionality.

Would you recommend converting the question into an idea and then merging it into the previous idea to clean things up? Or would you recommend leaving it as a question?

I mean I want to keep the Community organized and make the info easy to find for members. But because that member didn’t see the idea in the first place, I thought I maybe should leave it as a question so others are more likely to find and then the link to the idea which could reduce the chances of another question or idea being submitted for the same thing.

Howdy! You have reached the power of a Super User! Just so ya know, I’m not a Gainsight employee myself - I’m literally a user on my home forum who likes to hang out here! :D

Personally… I’d say the answer depends on the context!

If the Idea doesn’t exist yet, I’d say definitely consider converting it to an Idea so that you’ve captured the entire discussion for your team to see all in one place - and for max convenience for the original user - since it also makes sure they get the credit for suggesting it.

If it’s an Idea post that’s a duplicate of an existing one, easy fix is, of course, to merge the dupe into the master. No need to re-invent the wheel there! :)

If it’s a question topic though for where an Idea post already exists? I’d kinda say leave it as a Question and then merge related Questions into it (or it into others) where the Best Answer links to the Idea post - that way it keeps things fairly tidy but still makes it discoverable.

Of course, you might take a different view but that’s probably how I’d do it if I had Mod Powers myself. But the real question… Is would you trust this evil genius Blastoise with them…? :)

We’re not currently using Ideation, but have previously.

My approach was (and would be again) to leave the question and embed the idea into the answer.

  • Raises visibility of the idea
  • Clearly defines current state answer/solution
  • Leaves open the possibility for others to reply with work arounds or alternate approaches
  • If/when the idea is delivered, the question could be updated with a new answer.

This is great info, thank you!
