Option to Show Earned Badges in Activity Feeds

I’d love to see the feed of recently awarded/earned badges integrated with the main activity feed widgets.

And in addition to that, enable the ability for others to Like that update in the feed and comment to congratulate their fellow community members.

This is likely quite dependent on each community’s gamification strategy, so it’d be ideal to offer an on/off toggle. Perhaps even a toggle on each badge (like with the private message automation toggle) so that communities could choose which badges they want to show in the feed

Use Cases:

  • Certification Badges
  • Top contributor badges
  • Key accomplishments (onboarding milestones, speaking on events, volunteer or advocate roles, customer go lives)

Key benefits:

  • Promoting peer-to-peer relationships and encouragement
  • Increased visibility and significance of the badges if it

Think of it as unlocking a public and community-wide version of the option to message the user when they get a badge. The tactic is nice from the community team, but this would allow community-wide reinforcement and congratulations.

This is absolutely inspired by of some key Linkedin and social media behaviors. I personally think there’s a lot of value Insided could unlock by enabling each community to be a niche Linkedin-esque community specific to that focus.

Thanks for sharing @DannyPancratz. From your perspective, what added benefit would this have over the current sidebar widget for recent badges?

@Sebastian The key benefit is related to this idea:

Congratulating each other is a nice human-to-human connection that could help build the sense of belonging and camaraderie in our communities.

Use case that inspired this: Awarding badges for our hackathon winners, finalists, and participants. It’s the type of thing that on Linkedin (if shared as a badge or cert) would get a ton of engagement from the user’s network.

Sidebar widget only shows X number of recent badges. And the full page is cut off after 20 or so too. (Full page also doesn’t get much traffic on ours)

IMO, unlocking this type of peer-to-peer positive reinforce increases the value of each badge, increasing all the benefits of gamification. When I award badges via Credly (we do this for our superuser SME badge), they get shared on Linkedin and a ton of positive reinforcement. How might we do something similar on the community?

This is especially valuable if you move forward with more social-feed and notification center enhancements to the real-time experience. The likes and comments on their badges in the notification center increase the positive reinforcement of the badge.

TL;DR: The appearance in the feed is key to two things:

  1. Awareness and visibility of badges and who gets them, thus incentivizing others to pursue them
  2. Engagement on the badges (likes and replies), thus increasing the value of the badge for…
    1. The user: more recognition, visibility, etc
    2. Community managers: more positive reinforcement for badge-earning activity
