Customize the RSVP button in Events

We are very interested in the ability to customize the RSVP button in events.

  • turn off the RSVP button
  • have the ability to change the action of the button, i.e. add a link to an external webinar host for registration

We utilize Livestorm for live webinars and currently, when we post those on the events calendar and a user RSVP’s, they are not registered for the Livestorm event and don’t receive the access URL. In order to get around this, we have to register them manually, which is highly inefficient.

Cheers!

Megan

Gotta say how events RSVPs work needs some effort from the inSided team. The workflow and experience is sadly incomplete and some really simple tweaks would make it work much better.

All that’s needed to me is the following:

  • a simple toggle to determine if RSVPs are accepted via the community or not
  • if via the community, leave it working as is, users click Attend and the person is added to the attendee list and a confirmation displayed
  • if external URL (such as a third-party site) display the attend button and link that to the the Link URL as entered so people go there to register
  • if the event is being hosted on another platform such as Livestorm, GoToMeeting, Zoom, just make it easy to pass along registrant details to that platform. Yeah I know I can use Zapier, and yes it works, but I’m sure there are some common options here that native integrations would provide.

Hi all, thanks for voting for this idea and sharing your thoughts @Scott Baldwin @Hiewwaiy @mhuddleston @JessEs @nicksimard @Rudi @Emil @DannyPancratz @alex.maks @Julia_M

We are currently looking into this idea and would like to hear your feedback about the following concept:

While creating events, you can choose to use community RSVP or external RSVP. External RSVP allows you to customise the call-to-action button and redirect users to the external event registration page.
An event page in the destination with external RSVP setting.

Please note that as the registration is done externally, inSided doesn’t have attendee list. Therefore, no attendee information will be shown in the event page and event cards.

Questions

  • Would this work for your community?
  • Is there any use cases of switching RSVP setting after creating the event, is that an issue? e.g. switching from community RSVP to external RSVP after creation.
  • After the event ends, the external ‘register now’ button will be replaced by ‘event end’ text, is it what you’d expect?

Curious to hear your opinions. :)

Hi @xiaoyu-shen - thanks for this update!

The example images look like they’re exactly what we need in our community. A lot of the Insided control environment is set up to have universal settings across all module uses, so I especially like the option to customize the button text per event page.

  • Would this work for your community?
From the conversations I’ve had with the team, yes this would absolutely work. We are aware that the attendee info would not be collected on Insided, and we’re ok with that. The external registration forms we set up will be enough for us to collect that info.

  • Is there any use cases of switching RSVP setting after creating the event, is that an issue? e.g. switching from community RSVP to external RSVP after creation.
Are you asking this to determine if changing these settings should be an option after publishing the event? If so, just having the possibility of updating that after publishing would be nice to have, especially because there is currently no option to duplicate an event.

Our use case for the external registration is mainly for collecting more information for in-person events, and given the state of the pandemic and changing rules for in-person gatherings, it would be useful for us to keep the original event page live should we have to change it to a virtual event (for which we would only need community sign-up as an option).

  • After the event ends, the external ‘register now’ button will be replaced by ‘event end’ text, is it what you’d expect?
At the event end, yes. Potentially down the road, adding in a registration deadline option (that can be set to a custom amount of days before the actual event end) to the button could be useful, though.

Hi @xiaoyu-shen thanks for sharing. My comments:

Would this work for your community?

Not really. We don’t want to take people somewhere else to register, we want that experience to happen within inSided and in as seamless a way as possible. Today we’ve ended up using Zapier, stitching in Marketo and then have Marketo integrated with Zoom and I’ll likely stick with that if this is the limit of the change.

Is there any use cases of switching RSVP setting after creating the event, is that an issue? e.g. switching from community RSVP to external RSVP after creation.

I could imagine this being a possibility if setup incorrectly, but can’t see there being a need mid-event.

After the event ends, the external ‘register now’ button will be replaced by ‘event end’ text, is it what you’d expect?

Yes.

I would add that I think either way we need to get rid of the Add to Calendar option, as this simply is confusing regardless of the RSVP approach and often results in people thinking they are attending when they aren’t (and yes I know you can hide this with CSS). Instead that option should be in whatever followup they get once registered (e.g. the modal that appears, or from the event system of record - for example Zoom in our case)

Would this work for your community?

Yup, this would be enough for us :)

Is there any use cases of switching RSVP setting after creating the event, is that an issue? e.g. switching from community RSVP to external RSVP after creation.

For us, nope. If it’s set up as one thing, it won’t need to be changed.

After the event ends, the external ‘register now’ button will be replaced by ‘event end’ text, is it what you’d expect?

Yeah, that’s what I’d expect.

@Scott Baldwin I have similar feelings about the Add to Calendar button. I send in a suggestion a while back on showing that field only to those who have actually clicked on the RSVP button.

Likely a different use case there for external registration (and yes, adding custom registration fields directly to an event page would be amazing), but for any events with a simple RSVP I see this as a huge improvement in admin-to-community member communications.

@xiaoyu-shen thanks for taking this up - this change will make the Events posts much more integrated in our existing flow for planning and promoting events.

  • Would this work for your community?

Yes, that’s what we need.

  • Is there any use cases of switching RSVP setting after creating the event, is that an issue? e.g. switching from community RSVP to external RSVP after creation.

Yes, good to have the option to change in case you make a mistake while creating the event!

  • After the event ends, the external ‘register now’ button will be replaced by ‘event end’ text, is it what you’d expect?

Yes, that would also be handy to avoid confusion. Especially because the year doesn’t seem to appear in the Event date (?)

Would this work for your community?

Yes, this would work for us. Our events are mostly in GoToWebinar, and I don’t mind the redirect, rather than registering within the communiyt.

Is there any use cases of switching RSVP setting after creating the event, is that an issue? e.g. switching from community RSVP to external RSVP after creation.

I don’t think so, no.

After the event ends, the external ‘register now’ button will be replaced by ‘event end’ text, is it what you’d expect?

It’d be nice if we could customize this with something like, “watch the recording.” Otherwise, event end is fine.

this looks like a great starting point for this feature.

Yes, it’d work for our community’s use cases.

I agree with @Scott Baldwin that the ability to change the RSVP setting after it is created is a good idea to add in the future. If not only for human errors and changed decisions, but also if an event starts on Insided and then later needs additional registration functionality (ex. more registration fields, questions, etc).

Yes, the event end text/button works for me.
