Our new text editor is now available on all communities!
We are very proud to announce that our completely new editor is now available for all users on all communities! We have invested a lot of time to give you and your users more options to create richer content in an easy way - so we hope that you will enjoy working with the new editor as much as we do!
We are investigating line-height / spacing inconsistencies as well as problems with selecting text on some viewports (e.g. Safari on iOS).
Polls are temporarily not available, but will be added again soon.
Overview of improvements
There are many things which have improved with the new editor, just to name a few:
Improved existing features
Image upload
Drag & drop images into the editor instead of manual upload
Captions (descriptive text underneath uploaded images)
Code
In-line code is now possible (previously code was in an extra line)
Code syntax (code is not being stripped automatically anymore)
Lists
Multi-level lists are possible now
Better UX in working with lists (previously lists could not be interrupted by line breaks)
Text styling
Text styling within lists was not fully supported before
New features
Tables!
Callouts
Text color / background color
Horizontal lines
Of course not all of these features are available to end users, some of these (e.g. text color, header, callouts) are only available in the Control environment for now. We have plans to make this available to front-end users via user roles in the future, so that you are in control of who can make use of these features - please share your thoughts on this with us in the comments!
Feedback
Please let us know what you think of this improvement, also how your users are feeling about it. This way we can adjust and improve the editor even further in the future!

New updates :)

NEW Improved quote behavior is here (break a quoted section, multi-quotes, exit a quote, remove a quote etc.)
You can use the blue dotted guidelines in and around quotes to control your cursor and exit (inline) quotes.
Double enter inside a quote will automatically exit a quote.
Double enter inside a user quote will break it into multiple user quotes
Clicking the grey resize icon in the top left of a quote will select an entire quote. Selected quotes can be recognized by a 2px blue line.
Select a quote and hit backspace to delete the entire quote
Thanks for this update@Yoeri! There is one thing that doesn't work with the quotes yet. We can't change the name of the person who was quoted.
For example: if an user accidently has their phonenumber as username and we change that to something else, we can't change the quote to their new username. For their privacy I very much like to hide something like that. Deleting the quote altogether might make the conversation confusing, so if possible I prefer not to do that.
Is this something that can return to the quotes? This was possible with the old editor.
Same problem here! We just had a new customer use profanity in username and he was quoted in another customers comment. Best solution would be that the quote function would check the username instead of just copying it as a text
Hi,
A problem with the contextual menu. When right-clicking below the cursor line, the menu does not display correctly (there are no copy/paste/cut options).
Example : Here, I right-clicked on the text cursor line (where there's the red circle). We see the menu with copy/paste/cut.
Here, I right clicked below the text cursor line. There is no copy/paste/cut.
This happens on all browsers :)
Can you show me a page where a table behaves as you'd like it to?
The best way to delete a spoiler or (nested) quote is to select the entire box (Clicking the grey resize icon in the top left of a quote or spoiler will select it. Selections can be recognized by a 2px blue line. ) and hit the backspace/delete key on your keyboard. See the spoiler below for an animated gif
We’ll investigate wether it’s possible to alter the username of the person who was quoted. For now it is best to create a manual blockquote and put the username in bold above it.
The contextual menu works as expected. It will only show relevant options (cut/copy/paste) in the line where content is displayed
While quoting in control there’s sometimes “Common” added to customers name while editing. We tested publishing the comment and it luckily didn’t follow to finished comment

Thanks so much for your hard work to deliver these fixes, @Yoeri and all others involved. I wanted to share this post from our super superuser – evidently it’s not possible to split up a quote that’s one long paragraph:
Here’s another example, quoting Jasper’s post above. I was able to finally splice the quoted paragraph but it took several times pressing “Enter” and then backspacing, and then entering again.
@Jurgen, about your feedback:
Editing or replying to an @-mention causes it to be sent again.
This should not happen, it was supposed to be fixed for all cases about 8 days ago.
Edit: My colleagues informed me that it was fixed today, not a week ago. If you should get a notification for this edit, please let me know.
@Julian if a @mention is quoted, should one receive an email notification of the quoted @mention or not?
At the moment notifications are being sent if @mention is quoted.
Bugfix We resolved a bug for editing tables in Control. You can now add, edit and remove table cells/rows/columns
In progress
We’re working on the following items and expect to release them soon
Ability to add Polls to your topic
Links that point to a webpage outside of your community (outgoing links) will open in a new tab
Next
The following items will be enhanced over time
Replace default editor font with your company font
Display of the @mention list on mobile
Do not send double notifications when you’re mentioned in a quote and somebody replies to it.
Investigations update
We investigated the following feedback and came to the following conclusions:
The editor starts writing in italics (link). We were unable to reproduce this behavior and will stop the investigation.
Responsiveness of tables (link). We pushed a small fix that will wrap words, we won’t make additional changes to the responsive behavior of the table.
Discrepancies between editor and final view (link). This is most probably caused by the fact that the default editor font is different than your company font. We are planning to fix this.
Error message ‘No text’ when there was text (link). We were unable to reproduce this error state and will stop the investigation.
“Bouncing” behavior of the editor (link). We are not experiencing this issue, but his behavior may happen depending on the browser, viewport, display settings and content inside the editor. As each scenario is unique it’s hard to resolve the specific use cases in which this happens, therefore we’re not making any changes to the editor viewport.
Chromium doesn’t show a contextual menu (link). We pushed fixes to the contextual menu so that it opens on a regular right-click.
Copy/pasting.GIFs are converted to a static image (link). This is how the browser’s native copy/paste works, it can also be reproduced on other services, eg: google drive. To upload gif users can download them and use the image uploader to upload the gif.
Selecting misspelled words moves the indicator to the beginning of the post on mobile (link). We were unable to reproduce this behavior on iOS Chrome, Safari and Firefox. We will stop the investigation.
The letter ‘g’ is wrongly displayed. (link) We were unable to reproduce this, but we expect that replacing the default editor font with your company font will resolve this.

As this happens with different users, different machines, software combinations and so on, I’d ask you if you could still look into this? I’m using Win7 combined with Chrome on 27” 16:9 monitor with 1920x1080 resolution via HDMI cable as I write this. Zoom level is 100% and I’m not running anything that would modify the experience from my end. Every time line is changing, there’s the elevator bar in the field that disappears after the newest line gets longer. As this has been reported to us from our users, I’m obligated to deliver this request regarding this issue if you’d still check this :)
It sees that delete/backspace is not working in all cases?
I was unable to delete the Spoiler section (I’m using Version 77.0.3865.90 (Official Build) (32-bit))
Our community user (Firefox version 70.0 (32-bit))was unable to delete even a larger section:
@Yoeri & @Julian what’s up with this one?
I know you suggested that
“The best way to delete a spoiler or (nested) quote is to select the entire box (Clicking the grey resize icon in the top left of a quote or spoiler will select it. but in our community we seem to have quite a few cases in which users would like to edit the quote - in these cases the quoted comment is usually long and complex - therefore it’s simpler to have only the relevant part as a quote :)
The same principle applies to edit larger and complex quotes that contain multiple elements (quotes, spoilers, images, videos, quotes in quotes, etc.). Each element represents a box that can be individually selected.
When selecting elements by dragging your mouse cursor you have less control over how to delete or edit elements within a quote (because you can select multiple elements at the same time like your last screenshot)
Here’s how I edited your quote which contains multiple elements:
Hope this helps :)

Hi @Yoeri ! Thanks for your quick reply :)
I don’t know if this is a language barrier - but I’m not really sure if we’re discussing the same issue here.
Our issue is that a user might only want to quote one single sentence of a long topic - meaning that deleting an element is not an option when the user wants to be able to edit the text within that element. And that seems to be impossible for some users as back space or delete don’t erase text.

Is this what you mean? Chopping a larger quote (I used the post above) into a single sentence? :)
And that seems to be impossible for some users as back space or delete don’t erase text.
I do experience the same (usually when there is a @mention inside a quote) sometimes I need to trigger backspace multiple times in order to erase the text, but I’m always able to erase text. We look into this and see if we can make improvements here

@Yoeri - yes, that’s exactly what I mean! I’ve also been able to edit quotes myself - most of the time - but some users experience more problems. I’ll ask them to provide details of their browsers etc if this problem persists.

Hi@Ronald Posthumus,
about your feedback:
paperclip for adding files
I am not sure about this, maybe I understand it wrong? I read it like you miss the option to e.g. add an image as an attachment rather than adding it into the text box itself?
We have changed the behaviour in a way that, if you upload an image it gets added as an attachment automatically. But attaching files now also allows you to e.g. add an image as a file to your post. Or are you missing the preview / thumbnail view of media added as attachment?
The letter ‘g’ is wrongly displayed in the reaction field
I’ve seen reports of this before, however it seems not to be caused by the platform, but rather by a missing font. But maybe I am wrong and confuse it with something else - I will investigate & dig out what I have found the last time I have heard it and will share it here!
Hey Julian,
I was away for a couple of days (not a good thing to do when these issues are running arround haha). The G letter is also showing on the Inspired Community when typing in ‘italic’. So its the same. I don't see the company font solving this, looks to be something else (using Chrome Versie 77.0.3865.120 Officiële build 64-bits)?
As for the image/paperclip, lets start at the beginning, so lets forget about the paperclip.
In the previous editor we did not have attachments turned on for our users. but by default everyone can always add images.
When they would add an image, then it would automatically become an attachment.
then you could choose to make it appear in the text and as an attachment, or only as an attachment or only as in text.
The new editor does not support this anymore and will always display an image in the text.
(So again, this is without the function to add attachments)
Hope this clarifies a bit.
Cheers,

Thanks, @Yoeri. I just tried this and it didn’t work as expected. For example, with this post, I have two links that go to coursera.org pages. Both links opened in the same tab, taking me away from the community platform. Because our community page is coursera.community, I assumed this would cause coursera.org pages to open in a new tab. Is this correct?
It’s been over 3 weeks that we released the editor and meanwhile quite some things have changed and improved because of your feedback Here’s the latest update:
In progress
UI fix that resolves an issue where the @mention list goes out of the screen on smaller viewports
Investigating & Next
The following items are still being investigated and/or on the list to be improved over time:
Replace editor font with your company font
Send a single notification on a quote that contains a mention
‘Bouncing’ behavior
Change the username of a user quote
Quotation mark behavior in finnish
Open up text colors for users (psst vote on the poll if you haven’t done this yet, so far it looks like you want to give your users the possibility to add custom text- and formatting colors)
Feedback on previous posts
The new editor has 2 different scenarios as it comes to adding an image: 1) Insert image will directly show the image in the content and 2) Upload files will attach an image to the post. It is correct that you no longer can select an image from your hard-drive an both insert it into the text and attach it. We deliberately choose for the new set up as it makes more sense to choice up front wether you want to 1) insert a photo or 2) attach a photo
@LPortalupi have you tried to post an URL that does not include your primary domain (coursera) and see if that does open a new tab. The way this functionality behaves is that it looks at the domain name of your community and all links with the same structure will open in the same tab
This was the last update from my side for a short while as I will be out of office the coming time. If you have any questions, feedback and ideas still do not hesitate to let us know, my colleagues will be happy to help and support :)

Actually the links in that example post I linked to were bit.ly links, and they opened in the same tab. I just tested this with another post’s link to a different Coursera.org page and it opened in a new tab. This seems to be inconsistent; it doesn’t seem like expected behavior.
It was my understanding this had been resolved, but maybe it hasn’t been – I just got an email notification about my own reply to a community member because I used the quote feature, which included his @mention of me:
This is the reply I posted that elicited the above email notification.

The same happened to me yesterday also @LPortalupi, so it seem’s that it’s not resolved :(

Hey @Yoeri , thanks for the update,
But this is exactly the issue that i'm addressing, because we don't want all users to add just any file to there post, we have not enabled attachments for users. At least, I'm guessing this is what you mean.
In other words, your ideal world would be where all users will have all those rights. But this also enables users to add all kinds of attachments to their posts, thus making it more work in moderating so no spam/trash gets on the community. I guess this can be just scared thinking on our part.
Is it correct to say that you then think this is a minimal problem? So we should just enable the ‘add attachments’ for all users?
Cheers,
Hi all,
I was out of office for a few days, but happy to take over from Yoeri here as far as it is possible. 🙂 Lot’s of things to catch up with, in case you miss an update on something please let me know!
@-mention in quotes
@Suvi Lehtovaara & @LPortalupi:
So I have shared your feedback that the initial fix of this issue is not working (in some cases?). My colleagues have created an investigation ticket to see what is wrong exactly, so that they can resolve this as soon as possible. Thanks for reporting this to us.
Attaching images vs. all attachments
I get your point, @Ronald Posthumus. Ideally, you would like permissions here to be more granular, so that you can choose e.g. to allow image attachment, but not support e.g. .pdf files.
I am not sure if I should judge if it is scared thinking on your behalf that allowing file attachments is a general risk, or if it results in more workload for Moderators. I personally don’t feel like it would be much work, at least i can say I don’t see much (or at all) abuse happening in connection with this feature. However I know that some companies are more strict with their privacy / security policy so they generally deny it.
Updating permissions to be more granular in this specific case I feel might take a bit longer, as we would have to first build a UI & settings to cater for this. I don’t think we can commit or share timelines as to when such an improvement could be done, as permission changes always have an impact and need extra time. However I generally would like to see you having more options regarding permissions in general!
So if I were you, I probably for now would test for the next month if your Moderators see any content they need to moderate after enabling file attachments (I don’t expect it). Alternatively, maybe it is a better option to have images for further information hidden inside a spoiler, so it does not obstruct the navigation within a thread too much?
Will follow up on other feedback asap! :)

Thanks for the information, Ronald. In the meantime my doubt also grew as I saw this as well in quotes… I have opened an investigation to see why this is happening, hopefully it is a quick fix. Will update you once I have more info.
edit: what is weird is that i only see it in the editor window, not in the final post:
