I’d love a widget that pulled all the topics with no replies. We encourage our community of customers, partners, and employees to answer questions - but there’s no real way to say “hey, here are some questions that could use your advice.” It’d be nice if there was a widget that did this.

Or if we could tweak the “help others” option to be for posts with no replies, rather than no replies marked as best answer.

Just voted. Help others should definitely be about questions with no answers and admins should be able to decide which category or area the threads (without answers) are being pulled from.

Hi all, thanks for all the input and suggestions for this idea. We had some discussions internally and we’d like to show you the concept and get your opinion on it.

Add a new tab ‘New questions’ (a list of questions without replies) in the ‘Topics & community categories’ widget. You can configure the text to display when the list is empty.

Although this new tab doesn’t contain many configuration options (filters, sorting options), we see this as a quick win to help improve the engagement in the new questions. We still have the flexible / configurable topic list in mind, and we will treat it as a different project.

Questions:

  • Would you use it when this feature is available?
  • Do you miss anything? Or do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance, and please let me know if you have any questions. :)

Oohhh… That’s fancy! I like the concept already. :)

Personally, I tend to use the Recently Active feed a lot for catching new questions, but this would add a new tool for me to use in case my existing methods somehow don’t catch something. I’d definitely use it!

As a Super User on my home base, there’s probably not much I can see that’s missing. But I think someone I know might have his thoughts. Let me see if @timcavey is around…

@xiaoyu-shen great to see this idea making progress!

Personally, I don’t like the idea of having the tab entirely empty. What I imagined was that there would be an additional option on the “Help Others” tab, as the goal is still to attempt to help and get a best answer. Setting the debate of whether it is part of the existing Help Others or not...

The easy way to fix the empty tab would be to have a Google Search results approach, if you search something uncommon, they use the “Did you mean… Showing results for...” feature.

In this case it could translate to a simple sub-header:

  • When there are no new questions:

There are no new questions without replies.
Below are some questions that still have no best answer:
<QUESTIONS WITHOUT BEST ANSWER>

  • When there are less than 25 new questions:

<NEW QUESTIONS>
There are no more new questions without replies.
Below are some questions that still have no best answer:
<QUESTIONS WITHOUT BEST ANSWER>

Just my 2 cents! Hope it helps!

Yes I agree with @SmartlyGreg, would the ‘New questions’ tab be alongside / instead of the ‘Help others’ (unanswered questions) tab? That could be a cool option but alongside another way for members to see this. For example, side bar?

Hi! Yes, we would use this. It’s definitely a good start.

I know our team would like to be able to sort these by category on the search page, but in the meantime, this would be really helpful.

I think the concept designs look good and we would likely use this feature if it’s delivered.

However, it feels a bit buried as an additional tab on the activity feed. Requiring a click over to it will reduce the awareness and visibility.

So while this would be a good improvement in the spirit of the idea above, I’d also love to see a stand alone widget for questions/conversations without replies. Perhaps that could be accomplished by just duplicating the widget and toggling off the other options to show only new questions. If that’s the case, I’d recommend a version of this widget that fits in the sidebar layout.

My use case: For super users and (non-admin) moderators who focus on answering questions, it’d be good to pop out a specific widget for them and permission it using the options @SmartlyGreg lists in this comment.

Additionally, allowing for this to be on all types of topics, not just questions would something to consider. A true “conversation” has more than one post in the thread. (But I’d still put questions as the top priority here.)

🤔 while this generally addresses the main ask in this particular idea, I do think the solution may introduce more issues and confusion for users than net benefits and I’d be unlikely to use it @xiaoyu-shen

  • Per comments from @SmartlyGreg and @timcavey above, I agree that the empty states could be improved.
  • I’m not clear what the difference in use would be between the Help others tab (which is unanswered questions) and New questions tab (which also would have unanswered questions).
  • I also like @DannyPancratz’s suggestion of this also being a widget where those could be called out in a sidebar.

Since you asked for other ideas...💡my personal suggestion would be to provide more flexibility with the tabs overall.

This would allow folks to meet each of their individual needs of their community.

You could do this by:

  • Allowing tabs to be created as needed
  • Allowing us to define the relevant content type(s) to include in the tab (questions, conversations, ideas, etc.)
  • Allow us to set the sort order for the tab (by activity date, most replies, most views, or sorted by newest first or oldest first)

Hi all, we’re currently doing some research on a versatile widget (dubbed Dynamic Content Widget for now) that should be able to cater for these use cases, and many others as well. I’d love to hear your opinion on this, but in particular, we’re looking for candidates to take this widget for a spin in a 30-minute usability test. You can read more about it (and plan a usability session) in the post below.

We are excited to inform you that we have begun enhancing the Dynamic Content Widget to include a new option that will allow users to display only topics with zero replies. Please note that the previously mentioned feature of adding a new tab is not part of our current roadmap. We believe that the addition of this option to the Dynamic Content Widget will effectively address the use cases we are targeting.

We welcome your feedback and would appreciate hearing your thoughts on this update.

Hi everyone, We are excited to share that we’ve added an additional filter to the Dynamic Content widget, enabling you to feature any type of content with no replies. This should help surface unanswered posts and drive more engagement. We’d love to hear your feedback on how this works for you!

Looking forward to your thoughts!

Ah! I changed companies so I’ve had a bit of a break between Gainsight communities. It’s pretty exciting to come back and see one of your ideas implemented!
