File attachments: now previewing on inSpired

Related products: CC Topic Creation

You might notice a new button/functionality has just appeared in the editor on inSpired - file attachments!

We're previewing this feature on inSpired ahead of its rollout for all customers on Branded templates.

We hope to make file attachments available to you soon!

What exactly will be available for the first release of file attachments?

  • Attach files to individual posts (and delete them, if needed!). This'll be available in both the community frontend and Control.

  • Configure whether users with the registered/superuser primary roles are able to upload files on the community.

FAQ

What file types will be supported?

.pdf .zip, .xml, .txt, .csv, .doc/docx, .xls/xlsx, .ppt/pptx

What's the individual file size limit?

25 MB

Will I be able to make it so that only moderators/community managers/admins can upload files?

Yes. By default, standard community members will not be allowed to upload files. This will be configurable in Control (ability to turn file attachments on for registered users and/or superusers). We trust the inSpired community, so that's why you're also able to upload files here :)

Feedback/questions

Please reply below if you have more questions about this file attachments.

Or, please comment if you've got any other feedback about this feature (positive or negative 😁), after trying it out yourself on inSpired.
This makes perfect sense, especially when it comes to making a user manual available to super users before product launch. 🙂
Actually one of our super users points out that this somewhat announces that there are super users with more rights than regular users.
Hey Jürgen,

just stumbled over your comment... Do they see this as a real problem, or did they just mention this?

It is true that you could give extra rights to super users with this. However this is not unusual: Also on your community users will receive more rights the more experienced they are. The right to edit your own post is only given to more experienced users as well.

So you could argue always (in public) that there are certain things you only want to keep for users who are being regarded trustworthy.
Hi Julian,

Zsolt raised this concern but mentioned that if we do this we should announce that there are super users as such.

Jürgen
Yeah, this could also be a nice option! You could "officially approve" their knowledge with this as well, so that other users know they can trust them.

But then do not forget to mention that they still have to follow the rules like any other user on the community. Otherwise users will misunderstand this.
@daniel.boon

Question: what do you mean by

individual posts?

Does this also cover private messages?

  • In our support community up to 60% of our private conversations with our customers rely upon adding attachments which our moderators need to provide the service & support.

  • Typically the attachments are needed to provide screenshots, legitimation details etc.

  • The cases that are handled this way could otherwise not be handled in the community.

Enabling attachments for private messages is also high on the idea-votes: https://community.insided.com/ideas/132

Cheers,

Florian
@Florian

No, this does not cover private messages. For the first release of the file uploads feature, we won't support file uploads in private messages - it's also not currently have it on our backlog for the near future.

Thanks for providing some stats and use cases - very helpful for when we look into this further.

As with any idea on our ideas board, we'll provide an update in the original idea topic if we decide to add this to our backlog.
I like this feature! It's important that we can manage which user groups have this right. But for example with our beta test groups that we have always actively going on in our community we have a need now and then to share certain documentation that is easier to do with file uploads in the future 🙂

Any estimation when we'll get this live on branded templates? 😉
Hey!

I have heard today that we intend to release this within the next days... Of course there could be always something coming inbetween, but in any case it should be just around the corner.

Of course we will highlight it here on the community once it is available, I will update you to make sure you will not miss out on it!

Cheers,

Julian
@Riina - it's now live :)

Hi,

So the maximum size limit is :

  • 25 MB for files attachments

  • 5 MB for an image directly updloaded in the text ? (answer from the Support)

In both case, it's pretty low... I can never updload any of my pics (taken from a smartphone) since they exceed 5 MB and are too big 😞 My workarounds are to lower the quality through a tool or make a printscreen, but that's not very convenient for our customers to do so! Would it be possible to inscrease this size limit?

Some users also ask to increase the capacity for files attachments since they would like to share .apk files.
Automatic resizing could be in ideation I guess 🙂
