We are very proud to announce that our completely new editor is now available for all users on all communities! :raised_hands::pencil2: We have invested a lot of time to give you and your users more options to create richer content in an easy way - so we hope that you will enjoy working with the new editor as much as we do!

We are investigating line-height / spacing inconsistencies as well as problems with selecting text on some viewports (e.g. Safari on iOS).

Polls are temporarily not available, but will be added again soon.

 Overview of improvements

There are many things which have improved with the new editor, just to name a few:

Improved existing features

  • Image upload
    • Drag & drop images into the editor instead of manual upload
    • Captions (descriptive text underneath uploaded images)
  • Code
    • In-line code is now possible (previously code was in an extra line)
    • Code syntax (code is not being stripped automatically anymore)
  • Lists
    • Multi-level lists are possible now
    • Better UX in working with lists (previously lists could not be interrupted by line breaks)
  • Text styling
    • Text styling within lists was not fully supported before

New features

  • Tables!
  • Callouts
  • Text color / background color
  • Horizontal lines

Of course not all of these features are available to end users, some of these (e.g. text color, header, callouts) are only available in the Control environment for now. We have plans to make this available to front-end users via user roles in the future, so that you are in control of who can make use of these features - please share your thoughts on this with us in the comments!

Feedback

Please let us know what you think of this improvement, also how your users are feeling about it. This way we can adjust and improve the editor even further in the future!

Hi,

We were not fully aware that these adjustments were coming, so we were a bit surprised by a sudden frustation of our Superusers. Here is their feedback from the Superusers of our Community:

  • The spacing
Hitting enter should start a new sentence, not a whole new paragraph
  • Editor keeps jumping
Apparently it keeps jumping left and right on an iPad
  • Hyperlinks
Links are not being added to their hyperlinks and text in the editor
  • Slide bar keeps popping up
Tried to add the screenshot below, then the slide bar on the right keeps popping up whilst I’m typing, until there is something to scroll (I put this comment above the next comment, since I couldn’t get my text indicator underneath the screenshot anymore..)
  • No text, but..text?

Hi@Suvi Lehtovaara,

we are still collecting all feedback, I will work on an overview so that you and others are aware of things that have been reported and/or are being worked on already.

About informing you: We actually sent a mail on thursday last week to give you a heads up, can you check if you received that? I will have a look if I you are missing in the list of recipients, but maybe it just ended up in your spam inbox?

Hi @Julian, sorry for being unclear. I did receive the heads-up last week thursday. However I would’ve appreciated an estimated time when this will be launched on Monday. Due to different time zones our team was already out of office when this was launched. Had we known to expect this late Monday afternoon/ Monday evening, we would’ve stayed online until we saw the new editor :)

We also have comments from our superusers :

  • "When I type a message, the characters are in italics when I didn't press the italic function."
  • "It is not possible to tag users with compound pseudos. For example, if I want to tag @Marie S, it doesn't work"
  • "The tag drop-down list is limited and does not show everyone. For example, if I want to tag @Marie S by noting that @Marie I can't because the list stops before"

I’m also noticing the above issues – the italics has been particularly frustrating – I’ve tried many ways to get text to appear Roman (non-italics) after using italics, and it takes me minutes of trial and error before I get it to work.

Hi @Julian !

For that, here’s a screenshot to show what is happening.

However, when the message is sent, it no longer appears in italics. :)

Our superusers are complaining about quotes and edits.

Our superuser are experiencing a lot of problems in editing their messages. One user had added a quote to his post by accident. He wanted to edit the comment so that there’s only his text and no quote, but he was not able to erase the quotes, leaving the comment looking like this :point_down_tone2:  This happens on Firefox, IE and Chrome.

When quoting, there’s extra rows within the “quote” :

Hi all,

once more thanks a lot for your feedback, of course we are processing it to make sure issues get fixed and requests are being logged!

I have a first update to share with you, the issue with regards to mentioning users should be resolved by now:

  • Usernames including a blank space
  • Searching users with uppercase letters
  • Listing contributors in the Control environment

Thanks to everyone who helped by reporting it here: @Marie S , @Jasper, @LPortalupi

I am also working on the list of known issues and requests, together with my colleagues from the support team. I will add this to the OP soon, so that it is easier to track.

Hi @bjoern_schulze,

also thanks for sharing your feedback with us! :)

Emoticons don’t always seem to be converted from text to icon. Well provide examples when we experience it again

Maybe this happens in edge cases where the editor is not sure if this is part of a sentence or an emoticon:( something like this). Will log it and wait for an update.

The new editor has a complete new behaviour regarding hitting “enter”. Formerly a new line was started, never a new paragraph. Now hitting “enter” creates a new paragraph, while hitting “shift+enter” starts a new line. That’s ok for us, but: The margin-bottom for paragraphs is 8px, which is not much. Are you planning on increasing the margin-bottom globally?

Right, this has been reported before. I think this might be related to the “line-height” issues we knew existed, but I will double-check with the team to be sure.

Font colors can be set in the editor in Control. Are you planning on letting customers configure the chooseable colors? Because then every customer could define own “corporate” colors to create a color palette that fits the company’s style guide.

Currently the plan is to give you the option to enable all colors to be selected via user roles. They are very powerful in the hands of trusted users but also a risk if being abused by detractors. I like the idea of giving you the option to offer single colors that match your brand, will forward it to the team!

File Uploads: Until recently every customer could decide whether to activate file uploads for their community. We opted out of it because of data protection issues. Will we be able to opt out of the file upload function again soon? We really, really, really don’t want our users to upload private files (such as invoices or contracts) to the public.

I have spoken with the team about this and it seems this has to do with a speciality of your community, bascially a custom limitation to disable file uploads while allowing image uploads. Ticket has been created, the team is investigating it currently.

Mobile view: We are currently gathering information what formatting functionalities are a must for our community users to have on mobile and we’ll provide the list soon.

Great, thanks for doing this!

Default text: In the old editor we could place a default text within the text field (via phrases) to give users some guidance about what to write and what not to write. This is missing now. Can you please add the default text again and make it configurable via phrases?

Yes, the ticket for this has been created already, the team will work on offering you this again (of course including the option to adjust it yourself).

Submit button left instead of right: What is the idea behind the new position?

This has to do with being consistent in the location of buttons across the platform. To make a long story short: Previous editor had the button within the editor, this was not desired for the new editor (e.g. for article creation page it would cause issues). We have now made sure that during edit, creation, etc. the button is always in the same place. Our product designer Xiaoyu will come back to this in another comment in here.

Hi@LPortalupi,

thanks for the updates and additional info. I was still not able to reproduce the issue with italics styling. As far as I understand it, you do not activate this styling, but it just starts displaying it in italic by itself, right? The ticket has been created and my colleagues are looking into it.

About creating hyperlinks: As far as I know we plan to have community-links (so to your own community) open in the same tab & have external links open in a new tab. I guess this is closer to what you would like to see?

The issues with line-space are being worked on of course.

Hi@Jurgen ,

Thank you for providing the feedback! You definitely have eagle eyes.

  • The control bar at the top really isn't an improvement in my opinion. It's a nuisance when you're making a long post.
    • Placing formatting bar on the top is actually a deliberate choice. Different from the old editor, in new editor the formatting bar is always in user’s view.
    • Old editor: if you would work on a really long article, you would always have to scroll all the way to the bottom if you want to add/change styling.
    • New editor: the formatting bar is always at the top, and you can scroll in the editor field to review the content, while the formatting bar is always sticky on the top.
  • Also, I'm noticing the icons are jumbled in the control bar. In particular: the u is out of place and there's a gap between the icons for quotation and ellipsis.
    • The underline function (u) is not an issue. These icons are from google material icons which is a standard repository.
    • The space between the quotation and the dropdown button (ellipsis) is bigger than the others indeed. We will improve it in the future. But due to priority, we decided to focus on fixing more critical issues and features first, for example text selecting on touch device, file attachment on mobile, etc.
  • Besides selecting text, right click cutting, copying and pasting doesn't seem to work correctly. (link)
    • We are aware of this issue, and we will work a fix.
  • In a marked answer, someone's bold text seems to have jumped to the right. (link)
    • Edit: This one is clear, we will also look into this!

Hope it is helpful :)

@xiaoyu-shen Thanks for replying at length :)

“The formatting bar is always in view”. Well in practice, you can definitely scroll past the edit bar both on desktop and on mobile. This happens if you scroll outside of the editor. In the old editor this was less likely to happen it seems. The stickiness and placement are 2 seperate things: you could keep the stickiness while still placing the editor below the text field.

However, this might just be my personal pet peeve and something I'll get used to over time.

Nothing's wrong with the icons themselves, it's just the way they’re spaced and outlined that's jarring. I agree that this isn't a critical issue. The other issues should be fixed first.

Thanks, @Julian. I’ll try to take a screen recording next time the italics issue occurs. It happens in certain situations when I want to shift from Italics to Roman style text; whether the “Italics” icon appears to be selected or not, the text is always italics. cc @Marie S

I like the idea of having in-community links open in the same window with external links opening in a new tab.

Thank you!

Hi, I’m back.   Is there a way for me to change the text color of image captions? It’s showing very light grey, so the contrast with the white background is minimal, which is challenging for people with visual impairments. Thank you.

An example within an example!

@LPortalupi  & @Julian This issue with the Italics has been noted by (at least) one our superusers as well - he uses Firefox (if that’s relevant 🙂 )

Hi @Julian,

since yesterday we don’t have "File upload" or "Image upload" functionality in the editor. Are you guys working on it in our live environment?

And another question: What editor are you planning on using for private messages? Until now, there is the old editor in action.

Hi @bjoern_schulze,

thanks for flagging this.

On the old editor, your community had a module which we activated so that registered users cannot upload files. With the new editor this (undocumented) module was not working any more.

The intention was to activate another module temporarily for your community in order to achieve the desired outcome, until the previous state is restored.

It came to our attention however that this has the negative side effect that also image upload will not be shown. So the decision was made not to use this.

I am not sure why this was added regardless, either it was miscommunication or it accidentially was activated. I have removed this now again from your community to revert back to the previous state and I will investigate why this was activated.

And another question: What editor are you planning on using for private messages? Until now, there is the old editor in action.

Almost missed that one. :)

So as far as I know, the private message text editor is (much) harder to replace with the new editor due to the way it is implemented in the platform. Of course we want all editors to be the same, however this one we had to postpone - due to the amount of extra work.

What editor are you planning on using for private messages? Until now, there is the old editor in action.

YES! 🙂 I’d also like to see this coming with it. We’re of course not forgetting about this idea and will come back on this in our bigger, quarterly ideation review. Will share an article covering this (and all other ideas) soon!

Quotes are now a disaster for both visitors and moderators, resulting in very weird looking posts with empty quotes which you can't delete.

Worst of all, we can't even fix the code because the BB-code editor is gone.

Let me reproduce it for you.

Agreed.

hmm were to post…

I posted it here, but should I fully type this here as well? Ah well, Il just copy paste.

Hey all,

Also some feedback from our side now after the roll-out. Overall it looks far more fluent, so that’s good 🙂 But unfortunately this also brings a number of set backs.

Major one:

The pre implemented text, which Julian also showed above, has been removed. This is quite a set back as this doesn’t give any hints to the topic starter anymore. Why has this function been removed? As I can't seem to find any mention other than the screenshot from Julian on this. This is quite a major set back. I'm talking about these phrases:https://attachment.freshdesk.com/inline/attachment?token=eyJ0eXAiOiJKV1QiLCJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJpZCI6NTExNTQyMDk2MywiZG9tYWluIjoiaW5zaWRlZC5mcmVzaGRlc2suY29tIiwiYWNjb3VudF9pZCI6MTU0MTY1fQ.m8bhaZC92wHBXEMOq9aNeJYHYsiYJMrWPJ8ke3nLK6A

Another major one: Chrome spelling check doesn’t work anymore, is there a workaround for this? Right now it just shows me that I have a different language selected, but I cant change it anymore.

Another major one: The font used seems to be Roboto now, that is not on Brand with our company. Do others have brand rules on fonts too? What can we do about this?

Other minor set backs:

  • A number of emoticons don't seem to switch when typing them, I also can't see the codes when hovering over the emoticons in the menu, is there a list with the working codes?
  • BB code editing is completely gone although the editor is still able to read it?
  • Deleting double quote lines leaves a small quote space, this is mostly annoying when you have quotes in quote and want to respond to only one of them and deleting the rest, you can’t fully delete the last little line unless you remove the entire quoting part in itself.

Also the changing of quotes works very weird. I suggest looking into this function and trying to change some double quotes for yourself.
Removing and adding text, typing before quotes (also didn’t work before). We have more instances where multi quoting now seems to work counter intuitive.

(But Mark already adressed this above)

Hey,

Before I dive into an update I’d like to thank you all for your patience so far and the feedback you shared with us, it’s great to read your feedback and build better products together with you. We’ve received, reviewed and followed up on your feedback – in this update I’d like to break it down to the status quo and our plans. The bullets are deliberate; short summaries over lengthy paragraphs 😉

Delivered

The following enhancements have been made after the release. Please let us know if the issues still persist

  • @mention fixes in control and destination
  • build-in spell checker has been added to the editor. Hold the ctrl/cmd key when right-clicking misspelled words to see spelling suggestions
  • improvements to selecting text on mobile devices. Copy/paste issues might still persist, see below

Priority lane

The following items are on our radar to enhance or fix first

  • (User) quote and its behaviour (break a quoted section, multi-quotes, exit a quote, remove a quote etc.)
  • Attachment permission setting in Control
  • Mobile behaviour for selecting, copy, cut and paste content
  • Add bold/italic/underline options to smaller viewports*

*Bold/italic/underline will be added based on your feedback - historically speaking they have never been a default functionality of the mobile editor

Next

The following items will be enhanced over time

  • Input placeholder in reply and description field (previous phrases will be restored)
  • Replace default editor font with your company font
  • Outgoing URLs open in new tab
  • Rendering of content when pasting a link or image
  • Rendering of content when assigning a best answer or editing a post with BBcode
  • Line-spacing improvements in content. This excludes the new paragraph that is started when pressing enter.
  • The possibility to add spaces to hyperlinks

Investigating

We are aware of the following feedback but we’re unable to reproduce and resolve it so far. Please let us know if and when this happens to you.

  • Content in the editor is always shown in italics
  • Error message ‘Text can’t be empty’ when you have text in the editor

Where is my feedback?

We tried to bundle and address all feedback in this update, if you feel we missed out on your feedback (or other feedback) please let us know.

Enhancements are on its way to resolve your most challenging issues, bear with us 🙏🏼 As always updates will be shared here on inSpired, thank you!

Thanks, @Yoeri! Just wanted to add my thanks for prioritizing the quote behavior. A superuser shared this example with me, and I share here in case it’s useful (though I know there are other examples on this thread, too).

“Unlike the old editor, the new one does not insert a space/break in response to the Enter key being pressed. Here's how I sliced up a quote in the old editor:”
